Guernica by Pablo Picasso

The Guernica is an oil-on-canvas painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. It's one of his most famous cubism works (an art movement for which Picasso is regarded as a pioneer) and one of the most powerful anti-war statements in art history.

The large grey, black, and white painting (which measures 137.4 in × 305.5 in) depicts war's brutality and horrors. Picasso painted this piece in response to the bombing of Guernica on the 26th of April, 1937. The Basque Country town in northern Spain was devastated at the request of the Spanish Nationalists by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during the Spanish Civil War.

Guernica was painted with matte paint and was carefully designed by Picasso to have as little gloss as possible. Thus, the painting has the spirit of a black-and-white photograph. The painting was exhibited in the Spanish display at the 1937 Paris International Exposition and other venues worldwide to raise funds for Spanish war relief.
