The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

The Starry Night is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. It depicts the view from the window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an imaginary village.

Vincent van Gogh created this painting in 1889. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941.

The Starry Night is one of the most recognizable paintings in Western art. It is regarded as the most outstanding work of Van Gogh’s career; however, the artist did not feel the same way. Van Gogh even called this painting a failure in one of his letters to Émile Bernard.

This painting shared the same unfortunate fate as its creator. The ingenious innovator artist and his magnum opus were not initially successful nor recognized by contemporaries, but gained wide popularity, recognition, and fame years after his passing.
